How long does gel polish last, and how to make it last longer

Long nails with a white to sky blue gel polish ombré

Gel polish lasts on average 3 to 4 weeks without chipping, compared with just a few days for regular polish. This mostly depends on how fast your nails grow and how you use your hands day to day.

Why polish sometimes chips early

Three causes come up most often: nails that were not properly prepped before application (leftover oil or moisture), frequent contact with very hot water or household products without gloves, and peeling off a lifted edge yourself, which damages the nail's keratin.

Our tips to extend the wear

  • Wait at least 1 hour before putting your hands in water after your appointment.
  • Wear gloves for washing dishes and cleaning.
  • Moisturise your cuticles every evening with a nourishing oil.
  • Avoid using your nails as a tool (opening a can, scratching off a sticker).
  • Never peel off a lifted section yourself: come back to the salon for a touch-up instead.

What if polish lifts before 3 weeks?

An isolated lift on one or two nails can happen, especially if the nail was already weakened. Feel free to mention it at your next appointment: your nail technician can adjust the prep for your next set.
